I read the article and I thought it was excellent. (It should be available at your library). Fortunately I have a copy of the HPL Tribute fanzine that has the WSH article that Ligotti included in his criticism of Lovecraft for Twentiteth-Century Literary Criticism. I did the same thing, even though I don't think TL's statment was an endorsement of Home's fiction. Furthermore, Home’s narratives are baffling and sometime barely comprehensible, somewhat in the manner of Robert. The prose is so complex and recondite that it’s all but unreadable, much like that of Clark Ashton Smith. I'm not sure that Ligotti's comments constitute a recommendation. The weirdest stories I’ve ever read composed the collection Hollow Faces, Merciless Moons (1977) by William Scott Home. I wonder if I'm a fool for having ordered, sight unseen, a copy of William Scott Home's Hollow Faces, Merciless Moons. ![]()

Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Greta’s pragmatic, reserved, yet passionate voice commands attention from the start, but in many ways it’s Talis, an AI with a sense of humor and a flair for the dramatic, that makes the story. Elián has no intention of playing along, and his arrival threatens to change everything. Her daily routine is thrown into confusion when a new hostage joins her Precepture. The Scorpion Rules presents a whole, interesting story, delivers a neat ending, and leaves me excited for Erin Bow’s next Prisoners of Peace installment all at once. One such hostage is Greta, Duchess of Halifax and Crown Princess of the Pan Polar Confederacy. Every would-be ruler must send a child to one of Talis’s Preceptures as a hostage, to be slain if his or her country acts up. Four centuries after an AI known as Talis took over the world to prevent humanity from wiping itself out, civilization has splintered into smaller territories, held in line through Talis’s orbital cannons, AI agents, and one simple philosophy: make it personal. ![]() ![]() This is how the game is played: if you want to rule, you must give one of your children as a hostage. As I read this book it was interesting holding these two goals in tandem, as at times one side might dominate my perceptions more than the other. However, as a reviewer of a non-fiction book I am aware that I am not just assessing it for my own personal enjoyment, but also for its potential enjoyment for others, whose prior reading might differ considerably from my own.
